Hi Jean-Marc. If you revisit Sabah, I strongly recommend Maliau, or else the Danum Valley.

If you want, I can try to ID your unknowns. Borneo has stong faunal links with Mainland Malaysia (and Peninsular Thailand) as it is part of Sundaland, so I should be able to ID some of them. You can email photos to me if you wish.

The individual Hesperidae (and Lycaenidae) pages are on my to do list for the monsoon season here (October-December).

Dear Les,

Nice and interesting page on Maliau Basin.
I'm just coming back from Sabah where I spent a month mainly in Kinabatangan area (Lowlands). Unfortunately, I had not enough time and (mainly) money to visit the Maliau Basin even if I was strongly dreaming about.

Soon, I'll add a new page Butterflies from Sabah (many pictures) on our website www.lepido-france.fr

Right now, I have some trouble identifying Hesperiidae species since I lack ad hoc books ! My samples do not match with those pictured in EK-Amnuay's book : bornean and thai faunas differ. Please, add new Hesperiidae pictures on your page :

By the way, the malayan entomologist (from Sabah) I met in Kota Kinabalu told me that 2011 was a very bad year for butterfly prospection. According him (Steve Chew), rains killed at least 70 % of the caterpillars, mainly in montaneous areas. Actually, my survey in the Crocker Range was very poor. Things were better in the Kinabatangan lowlands (where the diversity is lower than in mountains).

Approximatively, we observed at least an hundred species (excluding moths). I'll build a checklist asap.

Warm regards,
JMG
