"The Hemiptera are often called 'The True Bugs'. There is an immense variety of insects included in this Order. The order Hemiptera is divided into 3 suborders: Auchenorrhyncha (40,000+ species), Prosorrhyncha (38,000+ species) and Sternorrhyncha (16,000+ species). These, themselves are divided into superfamilies. All of species shown here belong to the first two suborders.
Suborder Auchenorrhyncha is made up of the following superfamilies: Cercopoidea (spittlebugs and froghoppers), Cicadoidea (cicadas), Membracoidea (leafhoppers and treehoppers), Fulgoroidea (planthoppers and lanternbugs).
Suborder Prosorrhyncha is represented here only by the Heteroptera which, itself, is subdivided into many superfamilies and on this site includes the Dinidoridae, Pentatomidae, Scutelleridae and Tesseratomidae. These insects are often, incorrectly, grouped under the common name of Stinkbugs.
Unless otherwise stated, the photos were taken on Koh Samui.
I would like to thank Philippe Magnien for the identification of Tesseratomidae, and David Rider for the Pentatomidae."
